Starting Pitchers

There are two pitchers tonight with the greatest strikeout potential on the slate. Boston Red Sox SP Drew Pomeranz ($7700) has struck out 37 percent of the hitters he has faced and he’s up against a Baltimore Orioles offense with a 27 percent strikeout rate, .282 wOBA and wRC+ of 81 against southpaws this season. Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers ($7000) has a 17.4 percent strikeout rate and he’s up against a Tampa Bay Rays offense with a 26 percent strikeout rate, .321 wOBA and wRC+ of 113 against righties this season.

Texas Rangers leftie Cole Hamels ($9400) has a nice opportunity tonight weather permitting against a Kansas City Royals offense with a 25 percent strikeout rate, .240 wOBA and wRC+ of 51 against southpaws this season. For his part Hamels has a 14 percent strikeout rate and a 4.94 xFIP this season. Hamels will go overlooked and will make whoever uses him tonight very happy weather permitting.

Los Angeles Dodgers leftie Alex Wood ($7300) has a good opportunity tonight against an Arizona Diamondbacks offense with a 24 percent strikeout rate, wOBA of .259 and wRC+ of 57 against lefties this season. For his part Wood has a 21 percent strikeout rate and 4.54 xFIP this season. Wood is a bit risky in Arizona but sometimes if you have to take a risk or two if you want to win big money.

Cleveland Indians Ace Corey Kluber ($9900) has a great opportunity tonight against a Chicago White Sox offense with a 24 percent strikeout rate, wOBA of .265 and wRC+ of 69 against righties this season. This season Kluber has a 22.5 percent strikeout rate and xFIP of 3.50 this young season. If I had to pick one pitcher tonight it would be Kluber.

Other pitchers worthy of consideration tonight include Tanner Roark ($8300), Johnny Cueto ($8300), Adam Conley ($8300) and Adam Wainwright ($7900).

Phil’s Top Three Plays for Friday

San Francisco Giants SS Brandon Crawford ($3900) has a nice matchup tonight in Coors Field against Rockies right hander Tyler Chatwood. Crawford strikes out less than 20 percent with a .292 wOBA and wRC+ of 88 against righties this season. Chatwood has been good this season but this is Coors and Crawford has a nice price point tonight.

Chicago Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo ($4200) has a good opportunity tonight against Cincinnati Reds rightie Tim Adleman. Rizzo strikes out less than 20 percent with a .342 wOBA and wRC+ of 116 against right handers this season while Adleman has a wOBA of .462 and wRC+ of 196 at home against lefties this season.

Cleveland Indians 1B Carlos Santana ($3800) has a very good opportunity tonight against Chicago White Sox leftie Jose Quintana. Santana has a .513 wOBA and wRC+ 247 plus he hasn’t struck out once this season on the road against a leftie.  Right handed sticks are slugging .657 with a .417 wOBA against Quintana when he’s on the bump at home.

Good luck at FanDuel tonight.
